Design Contest

The Information Security Office is pleased to announce the winners of the Information Security/Cyber Security Awareness design contest! This contest was announced and publicised during August and September 2005. As part of the the University's Information Security Awareness program, we realized that common design elements would go a long way to unifying Information Security Communications. Obtaining design ideas via a contest among students, faculty and staff would also serve as another means to raise Information Security awareness.
Several people submitted designs, all of which were reviewed carefully. The care and attention to the designs and the thoughts behind them are appreciated. The Information Security Office and the University are proud to have such enthusiastic students and staff.
Design winners were selected in the following categories:
1. Information Security Office/Information Security
Program
2. Cyber Security Awareness
3. Grill the ISO
1. Information Security Office/Information Security Program [Back to top]
A design to be used by the Information Security Office as a identifier and unifying element in communications.
The winning design was submitted by student Brooke Tuttle! Congratulations! Here is Brooke's winning design:

There is a lot of meaning within all of the elements of this logo. First, the interlocking circles represent security, kind of like a chain length. The lowercase i symbolizes both an I for information and an abstract person. And, if you use your imagination, you will see a keyhole in the form of the i as well, also representing security. The image of the arrow is synonymous with information, in our everyday lives arrows are always pointing us in the direction of information, leading us to answers, visually giving us clues and informing us. The color red represents the university, and the contrasting gray to keep the look of this logo sophisticated and modern.

This was a very difficult decision. A strong honorable mention goes to student Tony Ostertag for his excellent design:

The concept was born with a shield as protection device which will block out any possible intruders. It is a very abstract mark but aesthetically pleasing with a corporate look. I added the red flame graphic element not only to give it an original look, but a strong presence. The colors used are meant to suggest that this is a University department.

Two designs were selected, both to be used specifically in relation to Cyber-Security Awareness efforts. One "serious" design is primarily text and will serve as a unifying element for Cyber-Security Awareness efforts of either the Information Security Office or the Information Technology Division while the other design incorporated eye catching and fun graphics suitable for use in attracting attention to Cyber-Security Awareness events.
